Danger: Sidekick Data Loss

We've talked about several kinds of production quality issues so far in this blog, but not data loss.  At least not until now.  T-Mobile took a serious blow over the weekend, for the previously-popular (1.1m sold in 2006) Sidekick phones that store all of their data on central servers that apparently weren't backed up.  There are so many references to cite but here's one and two.

Yet another type of issue to be worried about, yuk.  Our framework lets you tally the areas for which you have concern and stay on top of them, so I think our book would have helped here.  We don't really know the specifics on this one so it's hard to say for sure, but if you have an interest in DR I'm sure the details on this one will be interesting to you and will probably be cited for years to come.

Another interesting aspect of this, if you read the comments in the Engaget article, is people are panning cloud computing... which is just silly.  Now maybe you don't want to jettison your visibility of quality into the cloud -- that makes sense.  But just because one cloud provider has issues doesn't mean they all will.  That'd be like saying because your Audi broke down (mine sure did more than once) that all cars suck.  Well maybe all Audis suck but certainly not all cars.  :)

The rumor is a server upgrade was done without first taking appropriate backups.

If true, then the T-Mobile comments about "may" be able to restore the data likely means that they'll restore the data to the latest feasible backup, and any changes done between that backup and the server crash are permanently lost.
