To make raisin bread you need raisins AND bread

In this extract (video below, about 1.5 min into it) from a lecture at UW, Farecast founder Oren Etzioni compares making certain technology products to making raisin bread: "Without the raisins, it wouldn't be raisin bread; without the bread, it wouldn't be raisin bread either".

Etzioni equates the complex technology nuggets in technology companies to the raisins, and the many other factors around the raisins to the bread.

I like the analogy, and I think it applies well to how IT is often in the raisin bread making business. However too many times the focus is on the raisins, and not enough on the bread. In the Opposite of Luck we talk a lot about the ingredient and recipes to make the bread. Technology is not of much use if you don't ensure the product will meet dowtime, response time, error, and scalability expectations.
